History of the Hospital

History and Profile of Shafa Educational and Treatment Center

The construction of Shafa Hospital began in 1960, and the hospital was completed, inaugurated, and officially put into operation in 1964. Initially, the hospital was established to provide medical care for patients with respiratory diseases, particularly those suffering from tuberculosis. At that time, the hospital was located completely outside the city and was connected to the city only by a narrow dirt road.

The hospital was initially named the Tuberculosis Sanatorium and was later renamed Reza Pahlavi Pulmonary Hospital. In 1977, its activities were suspended by order of the Ministry of Health. The hospital resumed operations in September 1980 with 150 beds and the opening of Internal Medicine and General Surgery departments.

By 1981, the Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Ophthalmology departments had been added to the hospital. Toward the end of the same year, the Burn and Trauma Unit was also equipped and inaugurated. In 1982, the Hemodialysis Unit was added to the hospital.

In 1985, following approval by the Ministry of Health, the hospital, together with its equipment and personnel, was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine for conversion into a teaching hospital. It subsequently continued its activities under the name Hospital No. 2 of the Faculty of Medicine, gradually developing into a specialized and subspecialized teaching and treatment center.

In 1988, the expansion of the hospital accelerated with the establishment of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Urology, Reconstructive Surgery, and Neurology departments. The hospital subsequently expanded its diagnostic and therapeutic services with the addition of facilities such as CT scanning, Angiography, Lithotripsy, and Nuclear Medicine.

In 1992, the Open-Heart Surgery Department began its activities, and the first open-heart surgery in the southeastern provinces of Iran was performed at the hospital that same year. The subspecialty departments of Rheumatology and Nephrology were subsequently inaugurated in 1996, followed by the establishment of the Oncology and Radiotherapy departments in 1997.

In 1999, Khodadad Mehrabi Ophthalmology Hospital was incorporated into the center. In 2001, the Burn and Trauma Hospital, which had been separated from Shafa Hospital in 1989, was once again integrated into Shafa Hospital.

As a result of the integration and development of these departments and facilities, Shafa Educational and Treatment Center has become the largest teaching and treatment center in Kerman Province.

The buildings of the center date from different periods, ranging from 1964, when the hospital was first established, to 2009. Several units and facilities, including the Burn Unit and its Emergency Department, Operating Room, Burn Ward and Isolation Unit, as well as the Dialysis Unit, Nuclear Medicine Unit, CCU 2, and General ICU, were constructed with the support and contributions of benefactors.

The center also has an auditorium with a capacity of 585 people. It has a total built-up area of approximately 34,000 square meters and is situated on a site covering approximately 91,000 square meters. Some of the buildings have a maximum of two floors.
